A small northern fruit which looks like a reddish-purple blueberry, saskatoon berries were a favourite of native tribes who consumed large quantities of it. The small tree grows throughout most of Quebec and few people can resist its red fruit and almond taste. The fruit is generous with plenty of pulp and a natural sweetness. It certainly deserves a place alongside the more easily found blueberries and cranberries.
Saskatoon jam is made with a minimum of high quality ingredients. It contains more than 55% fruit. Tasty and with little sugar, it is a great option at the breakfast table.
Saskatoon berries have more anti oxydants than any of the small fruit you will find in your grocery store. They also contain polyphenols and anthocyanins which give the fruit their particular colour and which science recognizes as prophylactics against several diseases, not the least of which is cancer.
