The cloudberry is a northern fruit which tastes like the south. The exotic mixture of mango, apricot and passionfruit appeals to the adventurous and leaves no one indifferent.
They look like an orange raspberry and indeed, they are of the same family but cloudberries have several unique features. They grow in poorly drained coastal plains and in the tundra and taiga. These areas are not easily accessible, they are wet and infested with stinging insects. About one in twenty of the ten-centimeter high plants will produce a single fruit. Yes, the harvest is very precious!
The Montagnais word for this fruit means fire as the leaves turn a deep red come fall and light up the entire coastal plain. It is part of traditional dishes in all northern countries around the globe except ours where it is little known. Jams, pies, liqueurs and many other preparations are made with cloudberries.
In Quebec, the fruit is little known outside of its habitat but we are trying to change that. Our jam is as simple as possible: nothing but cloudberries and organic sugar.
As with many other northern fruit, cloudberries are an important source of anti oxydants and they also contain iron, Vitamins A and C among others.
