ABOUT THE PATTERN

Pat Bruderer (Half Moon Woman) is a Cree artist from Churchill in Manitoba. She is a keeper of ancestral knowledge and an expert in traditional Indigenous art practices. Half Moon Woman is self-taught in the bark-biting technique, heavily influenced by artist Angelique Merasty from Flin Flon, Manitoba. Pat’s work is found in several museums, art galleries, and private collections across the globe.

The original work If It Wasn’t For Bees And Water by Pat Bruderer has been digitized to represent the art of bark biting. The lines reflect the unique character of birch bark. The patterns are created using teeth to bite on a thin layer of birch bark. The artist folds the paper layer and uses her teeth to create a unique image. When the sheet is unfolded, the bark’s pattern appears symmetrically and uniquely. Artworks are like humans: no two are alike.
