Chokecherries, small spherical fruit the size of a pea, are a wonderful spectacle along country roads, the bright red fruit contrasting with the glossy dark green leaves. They are easy to harvest and usually very abundant.

Eaten raw, they are astringent; they make your mouth pucker and blacken your teeth. Children love them. Many of us have fond memories of eating them with a pinch of salt! Cooked with a bit of organic sugar, chokecherries are mild-tasting and they make an exceptional jelly.
